Dear Parents and Guardians:

 

There are three (3) vacant Parent/Guardian Member positions available for School Site Council.  The term is from September 2017- May 2019.  At Back to School Night, on August 30, 2017 parents and guardians will be invited to cast their votes among the list of nominees.  The three candidates with the most votes will serve as Elected members of School Site Council.  The other candidates can serve as Alternates during the 2017-18 school year in the case an Elected member can not attend a School Site Council meeting.

 

The Santa Teresa High School Site Council shall be composed of no more than 32 members and shall consist of the Principal, the Principal’s appointed Coordinator, the Principal’s appointed Recording Secretary and a combination of Santa Teresa representatives:

  • Certificated personnel selected by certificated personnel (no less than four).
  • Classified personnel selected by classified personnel (no less than one).
  • Students selected by the Associated Student Body (ASB) per the Associated Student Body (ASB) Constitution student body (no less than three).
  • Parents and/or Community Members selected by parents at the school, during a public meeting (no less than three).

The Council shall be constituted to ensure parity between groups (a) and (b):
(a) combination of certificated and classified Santa Teresa personnel (classroom teachers shall comprise the majority of the those persons representing school staff).
(b) an equal combination of parents or other community members and students.

 

School Site Council meets once a month from 3:15pm-4:45pm on Thursdays in Room 200.  Parents/ Guardians interested in serving on the Santa Teresa High School School Site Council (SSC) are encouraged to nominate themselves for the 2017-2019 term.  Parents/Guardians can also nominate a friend.

Nominations for Parent/Guardian School Site council Member for 2017-2019 will close at 9am on Monday, August 28, 2017.

Good evening, this is Greg Louie, Principal of Santa Teresa High School with a reminder about next week, the first week of school!!

  

Monday and Tuesday, the offices will be closed due to meetings and in preparation of the first day ​of school, which is Wednesday, August 9. 

 

For students who did not yet receive their schedule, they can pick up their schedule beginning at 7am on Wednesday, August 9 outside of the Multi-Purpose Room serving windows.  There will be one window for each grade level.  

 

For students who did receive their schedule, 1st period will begin at 7:15am, 2nd period will begin at 8:20am, 6th period will end at 2:00pm and 7th period will end at 3:00pm.

 

On Thursday, we will be on our "S" schedule and on Friday, we will be on our "T" schedule.  For more specific information, please be sure to visit our school website at sths.schoolloop.com.

We need volunteers assisting in the Multi Purpose Room handing out schedules and in the Resource Room 219 checking out textbooks.  You will be working with staff members who will explain the process.

Good evening, this is Greg Louie, Principal of Santa Teresa High School with a quick reminder about upcoming summer events for our incoming Freshmen class.  

 

First, this is a reminder ​that our Class of 2021 Freshmen Orientation, hosted by our own ASB and Link Crew, will be on Thursday, August 3 from 8am-3pm on the ST campus.  During this time, our incoming Freshmen will do activities and games to develop camaraderie and school spirit, tour the campus, take their picture for their school IDs and yearbook, receive their class schedule, and pick up some of their textbooks.  All Freshmen are encouraged to be a part of the orientation.  If your student has special needs that we should be aware of, please call Ms. Melissa Hawkins at 408-347-6293.  If your incoming freshmen is not available to attend orientation on the 3rd, they can receive their schedule on the first day of school.

 

Second, our Class of 2021 Freshmen Parent meeting is also Thursday, August 3 from 8am-9:30am in the ST Theater.  If you are new to high school, we will explain what to expect for both the freshmen year and of the high school years.

 

Finally, our first day of school is Wednesday, August 9, less than a month from now!!  Hopefully your incoming freshmen is doing their summer reading, spending a little bit of time practicing their math, and enjoying their summer break.

For our Seniors, the Class of 2018 Parent Information Night is Tuesday, August 1 from 5:30pm-7pm in the ST Theater.  Likewise, the Class of 2018 Schedule Distribution is Wednesday, August 2, from 10am-12pm.

 

For our Juniors, the Class of 2019 Schedule Distribution is Wednesday, August 2 from 1pm-3pm and the Class of 2019 Parent Information Night is Wednesday, August 2 from 5:30pm-7:00pm in the ST Theater.

 

For our Sophomores, the Class of 2020 Schedule Distribution is Thursday, August 3 from 10am-12pm and the Class of 2020 Parent Information Night is Thursday, August 3 from 5:30pm-7pm in the ST Theater.

We’re very excited to announce an upcoming Perry Outreach Program on Saturday, October 28, 2017 at the University of California San Francisco in San Francisco, CA. The Perry Outreach Program is a free, one-day, hands-on experience for high school and college-aged women who are interested in pursuing careers in medicine and engineering. Students will hear from women leaders in these fields and try it for themselves by performing mock orthopaedic surgeries and biomechanics experiments.

We are now seeking applicants for our San Francisco program. Participants should be women in grades 10 and up with an expressed interest in science, medicine and/or engineering.  We would very much appreciate if you could pass this information along to any high school principals, high school science teachers or high school students you may know.  Applicants should be directed to fill out our online application in advance of theSeptember 28, 2017 application deadline.

Helping Hands Club is ending this school year with a bang!

 

We are in collaboration with one of Mr. Yellum's English 2A groups for his 20% project that focuses on giving back to the community and making it a better place. Hector V, Stephanie Q, Minerva B, Skye G, and Alex N, came forth with the idea to work together on one last PB&J sandwich making activity to be donated to Martha's Kitchen on Willow St.

 

If anyone would like to donate supplies such as Peanut Butter Jars, Jelly Jars or Sandwich loaves, please drop them off in room 216!

 

Our activity is on May 10th after school in room 200 and anyone can stop by to give a helping hand in easing some of the troubles four our low income families. Our goal for the end of the year is to make 400 sandwiches--double what we usually make!

 

Come stop by/ donate to help make that happen!

Stanford High School Summer College - Commuting Program

An eight-week program where students ages 16-19 choose from more than 145 college courses in 30 academic departments. Students create their own course schedules and experience what life is like as undergraduate students at Stanford. In addition, students interact with peers from across the U.S. and around the world and have ample opportunity to explore the unique recreational activities available on campus and in the culturally rich San Francisco Bay Area.

Students in the commuting program must be staying within a 100 miles radius of campus and with a family member or a friend of a family member (and may not reside on their own or with strangers or agencies). Students can enroll in as few 3 units and attend Stanford for as little as $4,726!

Dates: Saturday, June 24 – Sunday, August 20, 2017

Greetings High School Partners!

 

Before we break for the summer, we at Evergreen Valley College, need your assistance in our efforts  to extend and expand our commitment to provide academic and student support services for academic success. We need your help to get the word out to your graduating seniors to apply for the San Jose Promise Grant.

 

The San Jose Promise provides a “cost free” education, for up to two academic years, that includes tuition, books, Eco Pass (VTA Transportation), and health fee for qualifying students.

 

For students wishing to apply for the grant, they need only complete and commit to the following steps;

 

 

 

  • Earn and maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 each semester

 

  • Enroll in and successfully complete math and English courses (in addition to courses within student’s education plan) each semester

 

  • Enroll in and successfully complete a college readiness summer math course if needed

 

  • Attend required appointments with a San José Promise counselor

 

  • Attend required orientations, focus group meetings, writing and math workshops

 

  • Participate in mentorship, internship, civic or community service opportunities

On Saturday June 24th at 6:00PM the 43 Annual Charlie Wedemeyer High School All Star Football game at Levi’s Stadium will feature the very best graduating high school football players in Santa Clara County. Santa Teresa High School will be represented by Kyree Harbin, Alec Calderon and Trevor Scheibley playing for the South All Stars. This long-standing tradition has been the dream of many student athletes for decades. They get to play their last high school football game at Levi’s Stadium in front of a great crowd of fans and community supporters. This game is produced by the Rotary Club of Almaden Valley in partnership with the San Francisco 49ers and all proceeds go to charity.

 

New this year is the ability for each school to use this as a fundraiser themselves and with very little effort can raise much needed funds for their various needs. All that is needed is for Santa Teresa High School to email/social media blast the following information to all families and encourage them to share with everyone. Every ticket sold through this special link will earn $5 for the school. Here is how it works (feel free to cut and paste in an email blast);

I hope this email finds you well.  I just wanted to send a quick reminder that today is our deadline for provisionally admitted students to submit their Intent to Enroll to commit to attending San Jose State University in Fall 2017. 

 

Additionally, I wanted to send out a reminder that today is also the deadline for students who have to complete Early Start to apply for the Spartan Scholars program.  More information on that program can be found below:

 

The Spartan Scholars Program provides students with a scholarship that covers the full cost of participation in the 5-week academically intensive residential experience and gives them a head start by providing an introduction to campus support services and resources, developing writing, communication, time management, leadership skills, and connecting participants to professors and peers. The Spartan Scholars Program prepares and supports students in their transitional experience from high school to college. Qualified students are able to participate in one of the two components of the program: Residential or Commuter component. This summer experience allows students to complete their Early Start requirements, work towards remediation requirements, strenghten writing and math skills, and build their SJSU network of friends, faculty, staff,community and resources. Participants are awarded a scholarship that will cover costs that include: Summer housing, meals, Early Start courses, co-curricular activities, and off-campus events. This is an opportunity you will not want to miss out on!

 

Residential component:

- Double Remedial (Math AND English) and must complete their Early Start Requirement before attending SJSU in the Fall

- EFC of 0-800

- Participants in the Residential component are also required to reside on campus through the entire program due to the intensity of the daily schedule that includes academic courses and required activities throughout the entire day.  

 

Commuter component:

- Single Remedial (Math OR English) and must complete their Early Start Requirement before attending SJSU in the Fall

- EFC of 0-800

- Participants in the Commuter component do not live on campus and should live within a 30 mile radius from SJSU as the academically intensive program typically runs from 8am - 4:30pm Mon-Fri.

Hellyer Elementary is hosting a multi-cultural potluck celebration on April 29, 2017.  Volunteers are needed from 12:30pm-7pm.  Volunteers can work any part of the six and a half hour shift to help with children’s craft tables and if they have adult volunteers help with serving food (we’ll alternate every 30-45 minutes so volunteers can enjoy the Celebration)!

 

They plan for this to be an exciting event for the district and in addition to requesting volunteers they hope families will also be interested in attending!

Hellyer-Christopher Riverview Skyway, Seven Trees, and EGOPIC neighborhood associations are excited to invite you, your family and friends, to a Multicultural Potluck Celebration to eat, play, dance, meet new neighbors, meet Councilmember Sergio Jimenez, and celebrate diversity!  The Celebration will be held on April 29, 2017, 2:00 – 6:00 pm at Hellyer Elementary, 725 Hellyer Avenue, 95111.  We are asking guests to contribute to the Celebration by bringing a dish representing their heritage and to share their heritage we’ll have Seniors from the community tell their story of immigration to the U.S.

Guests will be treated to a special performance by International Recording Artist and Hellyer Elementary Alumnus: Kimball Hooker. We're also very excited to have performances by cultural wonders, McKon Dance: Kathak Indian dance; The Music Place: Children's Choir; Spoken Word Artist: Lorenz D.; and professional dance instructor, formerly of Arthur Murray Studios, Trev R. teaching Salsa.

Children of all ages are guaranteed an afternoon of fun with cultural games and crafts like the Scarf dance; and Batik Art (tie dye) instruction by Indian Artist: Mrs. Mathangi Sundararajan. We plan to represent all 8 continents (yes, there are 8) in some form during the celebration. This will definitely be an event to remember!

Good evening, this is Greg Louie, Principal of Santa Teresa High School with a reminder about the Class of 2017 Grad Night event planned for Tuesday, May 23.  Please be aware that tickets are $60 this week, but the price will go up to $85 next week.  The event will include great food (chocolate fountain, catered luau, tons of snacks, mocktail bars, and a sunrise breakfast), live DJ, casino, photo booths, and all night entertainment.  

 

In addition, the Seniors who attend Grad Night from 10pm-5am will be excused from school on Wednesday, May 24.

 

The Class of 2017 Grad Night will be a great all-night party put on by our parents to keep each graduating member of the senior class off the street and in a safe, alcohol-, tobacco-, and drug-free environment, yet free to celebrate their achievements and enjoy one last class party with their friends and classmates.

This time of year, Seniors begin to plan their Senior Pranks and Senior "Ditch Days."  
 
Please let me be clear: any Senior Prank that results in extra work for my staff, that vandalizes the school, or is done in such a way that inconveniences or offends others will result in serious consequences (ie. Saturday School, loss of Senior Prom, loss of graduation ceremony participation, loss of Senior Grad Night, etc.)
 
For example, it has come to my attention that some Seniors were planning to bring their dogs and pets to school on Monday, April 10.  Please understand that the only animals allowed on campus are certified therapy animals.  Any students who brings an animal to school (any day of the year) that is not certified to be on campus will need to take their animal home or risk it being collected by Animal Control.  Likewise, if the student misses school to return their animal home, they will be assigned a Saturday School to make up the missed time.
 
Rather than contemplating a "Senior Prank," I encourage our Seniors to come together to do something productive and positive rather than destructive and distracting.  The Class of 2017 is a special class and a poorly thought-out prank will tarnish your legacy.
 
In addition, there are no "approved" Senior "Ditch Days."  Seniors who miss school between now and the end of the school year may be required to attend Saturday School to make up for the unexcused absence.  I also ask that parents and guardians not "excuse" their Senior to attend Senior "Ditch Day."  We have Spring Break coming up and if Seniors really wanted an end of the year bonding activity, it should be done during Spring Break.
 
The end of the Senior year of high school can be wrought with temptation and bad choices.  The Senior Prom, Senior Grad Night, the Graduation Ceremony, and other events are privileges--they are not rights.  Please end your four years of high school on a positive note and please do not put me and my Administrators in a position where we must take away any of your Senior Privileges.

Today, all Sophomores received notice of where they will test on Monday.  If a sophomore was not in class today, they can find out their testing location by visiting an office on Monday.

 

That said, Monday, Sophomores will take the California Science Test from 8am-9:30am.  Freshmen, Juniors and Seniors should report to school beginning at 9:35am for 1st period and 10:15am for 2nd period.  6th period will end at 2:15pm and 7th period will end at 2:55pm.  Juniors will receive notice of their testing location on Monday during their 4th period class.

 

Tuesday, Juniors will take the ELA Non-performance task from 8am-10:30am.  1st period will begin at 10:50am and 3rd period will begin at 11:50am.  5th period will end at 2:15pm and 7th period will end at 3:15pm.

 

Wednesday, Juniors will take the ELA Performance task, from 8am-10:30am.  2nd period will begin at 10:50am and 6th period ends at 3:10pm.

 

Thursday, Juniors will take the Math Non-performance task from 8am to 10am.  1st period will begin at 10:20am and 3rd period will begin at 11:25am.  5th period will end at 2pm and 7th period will end at 3:05pm.

The Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institutes, R2L NextGen program is a week-long leadership and civic engagement opportunity for current high school juniors. CHCI will bring a group of students to Washington D.C. to learn how the Federal Government works, meet key leaders, visit historic sites and develop a deeper understanding of how they can affect positive change in their communities and their nation. The program, which will take place July 23- 28, 2017, is completely FREE of charge to all selected student participants.

We have extended our application deadline to April 3, 2017, at 11:59 pm Eastern Standard Time. Note that we have also opened the application to include students living in Santa Clara county. Please share this information with eligible students so that we may ensure that talented Latino high school juniors get access to this amazing leadership opportunity.

The Fiat Lux Scholarship interviews are coming up on April 5-8, 2017. Students from your high school may be eligible for this prestigious scholarship. However, we are working with a very quick timeline in which your student will receive their admissions decision on Thursday, March 30 and sign up to interview for the Fiat Lux Scholarship for the following week. 

 

We write to you in hopes that you can help us reach your students who have applied to UC Berkeley and urge them to check on their portal for a decision about admissions on Thursday, March 30. In their admissions decision letter, if admitted and if they have financial need, they would be invited to sign up for a Fiat Lux Scholarship interview. 

 

We will be conducting a phone bank on Friday, March 31 to make sure all eligible candidates have read the invitation and sign up. We have a limited number of spots for the interviews so please let your students know to sign up as soon as possible.

Dear High School Campus Partners,

 

The Financial Aid and Scholarship team at UC Berkeley hopes that you are having a successful fall semester. As your offices have been preparing your excellent students to apply to universities all around the country, we want to encourage that your students apply to UC Berkeley. UC Berkeley is a wonderful research institution with amazing students, faculty, and staff. We genuinely want students from our partner high schools to apply and attend UC Berkeley.

 

To assist students with affording the cost of college, we created a new scholarship program. The new Fiat Lux Scholarship program has combined the Cal Opportunity scholarship and the Incentive Awards Program. The new program will maintain the best programmatic elements from both programs. The Fiat Lux scholarship will help the students financially and help them to be successful at UC Berkeley. We have attached a one page summary of the new Fiat Lux scholarship with more details about the program.

 

Please note that there is no application needed for the Fiat Lux Scholarship. Students will be considered once they are admitted to the university. Our office will review their financial aid package to determine their need and they will be invited to interview for the scholarship in April. The interviews will take place on the UC Berkeley campus.

 

The Fiat Lux Scholarship is a great opportunity for your students. All students should have the ability to attend the school of their choice without having to worry about the cost the education. This scholarship will enable students to pay for school as well as equip them with a supportive community to help them be successful at the UC Berkeley.

 

Please encourage your students to apply to UC Berkeley. We hope to see them in April, interviewing for the Fiat Lux Scholarship. We are here to assist you as well, so please feel free to contact us about any questions you may have about the new Fiat Lux scholarship.

ABC7 Star Scholars (formerly ABC7 Top Scholars) is a scholarship and television opportunity recognizing the Bay Area's top high school academic achievers. ABC7 Star Scholars will award $1000 scholarships to seven local graduating high school seniors who are college-bound. These students will be profiled in stories featured in ABC7 Newscasts as well a special program, "ABC7 Star Scholars" (a half-hour special slated to air this summer). The annual project is intended to promote academic excellence by honoring and rewarding our top achievers. ABOUT THE PROGRAM The Young Ambassadors Program (YAP) is a national program for graduating high school seniors aimed at fostering the next generation of Latino leaders in the arts, sciences, and humanities via the Smithsonian Institution and its resources.

 

YAP is a college preparatory and leadership program encouraging participants to explore various academic and career opportunities through the lens of the Latino experience. For the past ten years, this program has received major and continued support from Ford Motor Company Fund. Students with an interest in and commitment to the arts, sciences, and humanities as it pertains to Latino communities and cultures are selected to travel to Washington, D.C. for a week-long seminar at the Smithsonian. This enrichment opportunity is a leadership development and skill-building training that exposes youth to a wide array of academic disciplines promoting higher education and encouraging the exploration and understanding of the Latino identity.

 

The seminar, known as Washington Week, includes visits to the Smithsonian’s Latino collections and one-on-one interaction with renowned experts from various fields. Following the training seminar, students participate in a four-week interdisciplinary internship in museums and other cultural institutions in 17 cities across the United States and Puerto Rico. This hands-on component allows students to gain transferable knowledge and apply the skills acquired during the training seminar to their internship assignments.

Are you planning on attending West Valley College? If so, you will want to take advantage of the on-site testing. West Valley College will come and do placement testing for our ST Seniors who are interested in attending West Valley. This is awesome because it will save you a trip from going to West Valley to take this exam. 

What Do I Need to do? 

1A) You must apply to West Valley (WV) by March 30.

B) Sign up on on the WV testing page and select "Santa Teresa High School" starting April 1st- April 4th.

C) RSVP on Naviance (see instructions below- # 2)

C) Bring your West Valley Student ID. no. to the test

D) Take the test in the ST Library on Tuesday, April 4th at 1:15p.m.- 3:45p.m.

E) Get your results! 

 

2) Make sure to Sign Up on Naviance to attend since this is during the school day! To RSVP, please log on to Naviance and click on: 1) "Colleges", 2)"Visit Colleges," " 3)View Upcoming 4) "Sign Up" 5) and hit "Sign Me Up".

REMEMBER, you must have your West Valley ID Number or WV Application Confirmation # to take the placement exam. They are switching to a new system and there may be a delay, so apply early!!

Need: 2 hours – 3 tests – English, reading and math

Lab: best if it is a PC lab

Results: the student receives the results at the end of the test. The results appear on the screen….and many take a photo. It is nice if the students can print the results so that they have this information available for their one-on-one counselor appointment during the Orientation - so printer is optional but not required.

My name is Robin Sharma and I am reaching out to you to see if it were possible to share some summer opportunities we have for the City of Morgan Hill. We currently have positions open at the Morgan Hill Aquatics Center such as: Lifeguard, Swim Instructor, and Welcome Desk Assistant.  

 

We wanted to see if it were possible to help us share this information to your students and/or I can come by during lunchtime and promote these seasonal positions. We recently had a job fair but wanted to reach out to high schools in San Jose closest to Morgan Hill if students were interested. ​Good evening, this is Greg Louie, Principal of Santa Teresa High School with invitations to a few awesome opportunities.

 

First, this is an invitation to attend the Local Control and Accountability Plan meeting on Monday, March 6 from 6pm-7:30pm in the ST Library.  During this meeting, we will review the District's plan to support our students and discuss possible strategies, programs, and staffing opportunities.  Your perspective and involvement in the process is very, very important so that the voice of the ST community is represented.

 

Second, this is an invitation to the "Understanding Highly Selective College Admission" presentation hosted by the Counseling department on March 15 from 6pm-7:30pm in the ST Theater.


Our guest presenter is Rob Schwartz, College Counselor from Premier College Guidance and faculty member in the College Counseling Certification program at UCLA.  Parents and students of grades 9-11 are encouraged to attend!


At the presentation you will better understand how admissions really work and how to navigate the road to your best-fit colleges.

 

Also on March 15 is the monthly Santa Teresa Organization of Parents and Staff (STOPS) meeting from 6:30pm-7:30pm in the ST Library.  Your participation is greatly appreciated to support scholarships, grants, and fundraising activities we need for our students to succeed.

Our opportunity to share our voice and express what we perceive to be important for the success of our students at Santa Teresa is Monday, March 6 from 6pm-7:30pm in the ST Library.  Currently, LCAP funding supported the decrease in class size, instructional coaching, additional librarian services,  our full time social worker, our Parent Community Involvement Specialist (PCIS), additional academic counseling for ST, and a variety of additional services, staff members, and programs.  Your voice as a student, parent, and guardian are essential in ensuring the needs of ST are represented.

     My name is Beatriz Velasco and I am currently in the Nursing program at San Jose State University (SJSU).  I am also the Breakthrough to Nursing Officer for a organization on campus called the California Nursing Student Association (CNSA).  I am contacting you because CNSA will be hosting a pre-nursing conference on the SJSU campus on March 18th from 10-2 in the Student Union Theatre.  This is a great event for anyone who is potentially interested in becoming a nurse.  We will have a few speakers at the beginning of the event that will talk about what it is to be a nurse, followed by individual smaller sessions where students can go and listen to presentations about what it takes to get into various nursing schools in the area, with a question and answer period at the end.  There is an RSVP link at the bottom of the flyer that I have attached, as well as, a Facebook event page link that students can access to RSVP to this event.  Anyone is welcome and the event is free.

Hello Seniors,

 

Are you planning on attending West Valley College? If so, you will want to take advantage of the on-site testing. West Valley College will come and do placement testing for our ST Seniors who are interested in attending West Valley. This is awesome because it will save you a trip from going to West Valley to take this exam. 

 

How do I sign Up? 

1) Students will need to have applied (Applications open March 1.) and have a WVC ID number. They sign up at the WVC testing page selecting their high school. (The test will be on Tuesday, April 4th at 1:15p.m. in the Library) 

2) Make sure to Sign Up on Naviance to attend since this is during the school day! To RSVP, please log on to Naviance and click on: 1) "Colleges", 2)"Visit Colleges," " 3)View Upcoming 4) "Sign Up" 5) and hit "Sign Me Up".

 

REMEMBER, you must have your West Valley ID Number to take the placement exam. The WV ID take at least 48 hours, so apply early!!

This news alert is being sent out to solicited the support of the Santa Teresa family. It's that time of year again to review the LCAP.

If you not familiar with this acronym. It stands for the Local Control and Accountability Plan. It represents the changes that California uses to manage school funding. The LCAP gives the district and the communities they serve more local control so they can respond to the needs of our students.There are eight priorities they focus on

4 out 5 are geared toward the student specifically, but there is one component that I feel is really important to help this plan work. The component is PARENTS, that is why I'm sending this alert. We need your voice. I know that these days it hard to carve out time for ourselves, and our family. I respect that but, finally, for the first time ever the LCAP gives parents access to the school district’s budget and planning process and allows parents to help determine its local priorities and approach.This is BIG, have you ever thought what would I do if I had a chance to make some decision regarding my children's education? I know I might have made it sound a little simple but, I do know that you are the key.

My name is Ashleigh Richelle and I am an alumni of Santa Teresa High School. Currently, I work for an Oakland-based nonprofit called the Level Playing Field Institute (LPFI).

 

I am writing to you today to invite parents of current 9th grade students to attend an information session and application workshop for our signature science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) program, SMASH Academy.

 

SMASH Academy is a free, STEM-intensive, college preparatory program for high school students of color and low-income. Our mission is to provide the support and resources needed for motivated students of color, with a focus on Latinos/as and African-Americans, to excel and persist in the STEM fields.

Good evening, this is Greg Louie, Principal of Santa Teresa High School with a reminder to all of our Freshmen, Sophomore, and Junior families about the AP and Elective events we are hosting tomorrow.

 

First, there will be an AP Student Panel during Advisory in the Theater for students who want to learn about the Advanced Placement program from the student perspectives.

Second, there will be an AP and Elective fair during the extended lunch for all underclassmen looking to learn about the classes for next year.

Third, there is the AP Parent Information Night presentation in the Theater tomorrow night beginning at 6pm for those families wanting to learn more about the Advanced Placement curriculum and commitment.

 

Also, as a reminder, due to the extended lunch, 6th period will end at 2:40pm.

 

Finally, this is a reminder that the January STOPS meeting is tomorrow night at 6:30pm in the Library.  We need motivated, excited parents to be a part of our ST Organization of Parents and Staff since a number of our current members will be graduating in a few months.  Please make time to attend this meeting if you can be a part of our program.

They will answer any questions you have like: how hard the class is, how much homework it takes, when you can take the class, how you can take an AP class and do sports or clubs, and what the benefits are for taking an AP class. 

 

This is the place for YOU to ask other students about these classes before visiting the elective fair at lunch, before signing up to take them next year in naviance, or before you are scheduled into the class during your counseling appointment. 

 

Make a good choice by doing all the research.....including asking current santa teresa students about taking AP classes. Bring all your questions with you and sign up to attend the AP Student Panel Q and A Session!

Parents, please join us for our AP Night on Wednesday, January 18th at 6pm in the Santa Teresa Theater.  We will present information about our Advanced Placement offerings and host an AP Teacher panel that will answer your questions.

 

Additionally, during lunch on January 18th (12:20-1:00 pm) in the Multi-Purpose Room (MPR), we will have our Elective Fair for students to find out more information about the electives that are offered at Santa Teresa. Parents are welcome to attend the Elective Fair.

The School of Engineering at Santa Clara University is pleased to present three programs in 2017 available to current high school sophomores and juniors interested in learning more about the field of engineering. Each program brings students to Santa Clara University’s campus to participate in various workshops or courses facilitated by our faculty. The goal of these programs is to provide students with a chance to explore the possibilities of engineering as a career with the hope of fostering a deeper interest in future engineering study.

Our program offerings vary in format and eligibility criteria to suit students across all levels of engineering exposure and need. We invite interested students to explore and apply for the program that is the best fit for them. The Spring Engineering Education Days (SEEDs) and Summer Engineering Seminar (SES) programs are geared towards students who have not yet committed to future engineering study and who have had minimal exposure to engineering topics due to lack of access, whereas the Young Scholars Program is open to students with any level of interest in and exposure to engineering. Due to the high level of student interest and limited space, SEEDs and SES program acceptance has become highly competitive. Please see additional information about each program below.

Spring Engineering Education Days (SEEDs): 

The 2017 SEEDs program provides Bay Area high school students with a unique opportunity to explore introductory engineering topics. Selected participants come to Santa Clara University over the course of three April Saturdays (April 15, 22, 29) from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. to participate in workshops spanning several engineering disciplines. Workshops are presented in a typical university format, with a mix of lecture and interactive experiences. There is no cost to participate in this program outside of transportation to and from the university, and lunch will be provided. Program applications and recommendations are due by February 1, 2017.

Summer Engineering Seminar (SES):

In its 28th year, the SES program is an outstanding, five-day experience in July offering specially designed introductory workshops taught by our engineering faculty. Workshops are presented as a mix of lecture and interactive laboratory work, spanning several fields of engineering. The SES program also provides students with a taste of university life, as they stay in university residence halls for the duration of the program, eat meals on campus, and take part in afternoon recreational activities and evening projects. There is no cost to participate in this program outside of transportation to and from the university. Program applications and recommendations are due by March 1, 2017.

Young Scholars Program:
The Young Scholars Program provides local high school students the opportunity to enroll in college level courses during the university’s first summer session (June 21-July 28) at a 75% tuition discount and receive college credits upon completion. Engineering offerings include: Intro to Engineering and Intro to Logic Design. The College of Arts & Sciences is also offering Intro to Computer Science. Program applications are due by April 21, 2017. Students are encouraged to apply early as space is limited.

It's that time of the year again where application fees and test scores (SAT/ACT) are coming due. Here is some information regarding the submission of those two items.  
 
REMINDERS and DEADLINES:
It is important for your students to continue to monitor their MySJSU account for updates to their "to-do" list items.
1. If your students have an outstanding application feel checklist item, the $55.00 non-refundable application fee payment is due tomorrowFriday December 16, 2016.
2. If your students have an outstanding SAT/ACT checklist item, the official test scores are due Friday December 23, 2016.
 
Your students would have also received a message from our admissions@sjsu.edu email with these reminders.  
 
Failure to submit official test scores or the application fee by the deadline will result in withdrawal of the student's application. 
 
For a student to avoid withdrawal of their application please review the following instructions to share with your students:
 
Application Fee:
1. The only acceptable forms of payment are money order, cashier's check or personal check made payable to San Jose State University.  If students recently sent a check,  please allow five business days for SJSU to process the payment.  
 
Test Scores:
1. If you have not already taken an exam, you must rush your scores from the last available SAT test on December 3, 2016.
2. Submit your scores on time, no later than Friday, December 23, 2016.
3. Have your scores sent electronically to SJSU. Unopened official paper copies are accepted, but electronic is preferred. Official paper copies of your test scores can be submitted in an original sealed envelope to:

One Washington Square 
San José, CA 95192-0016 

4. Important: Make sure that for your SAT/ACT scores submission, you enter your full name, birthdate and Social Security number exactly as you entered it on your CSU Mentor application. Any mismatch of this information (use of nicknames, wrong birth date, birth year, incorrect Social Security number) will result in the inability to match your information in our system, cause a delay in timely processing, and may result in the withdrawal of your application. 

HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR SAT SCORES:
1. Request your SAT scores from the College Board at http://sat.collegeboard.org/scores/send-sat-scores
2. Send your scores to the school code for SJSU #4687   
3. If you take the SAT in December, it is your responsibility to make sure that the College Board sends your results to San José State University before the December 23, 2016 deadline. 

HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR ACT SCORES:
1. Request your scores at act.org/content/act/en.html
2. Send your scores to the school code #0410. 

AFTER YOU SUBMIT YOUR SCORES:
Please allow at least 15 days for processing once we receive your scores. You will know when your scores have been processed because your ¿To Do List¿ item will no longer be visible.

The Dream.US is a multimillion dollar National Scholarship Fund for undocumented students, created to help immigrant youth who have received Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) achieve the completion of a college education.

 

The Dream.US provides college scholarships of up to $25,000 to undocumented students, to help cover college tuition and fees, this is in addition to the aid that students may already be eligible for at their respective institution. UC Merced is proud to be a partner of the Dream.US.

 

These scholarships are available to Bay Area high school seniors or high school graduates; who originate from Alameda, Contra Costa, San Francisco, San Mateo, and Santa Clara counties, who and have demonstrated financial need as first time college students who seek to earn a career-ready associate’s or bachelor’s degree at one of the following Dream.US partner colleges and universities.

 

These partner colleges and universities are:

De Anza College

Evergreen Valley College

San Francisco State University

San Jose State University

UC Merced

UC Santa Cruz

 

Students who are currently enrolled in college are not eligible.

My name is Courtney Bowen. I’m a sophomore at Stanford University and an intern for Stanford Women In Business (SWIB), a pre-professional undergraduate organization that aims to educate and empower young women to become leaders in the business world.

 

I am emailing you to inform you of SWIB’s annual Young Women’s Leadership Summit which will be held Saturday, January 21st, 2017. This year, the Summit will be geared specifically toward freshman and sophomore female high school students to provide them a broader sense of the business world. Students will have the opportunity to hear from inspiring keynote speaker Anna Fieler, Chief Marketing Officer at Popsugar, as well as various Stanford student entrepreneurs. Additionally, students will engage in workshops throughout the day to develop their pitching, self-presentation, and business skills. Furthermore, this conference will be a wonderful opportunity for students to learn more about a specific business-related area of interest, such as finance, marketing, or philanthropy.

This year, students in the International Relations Club and California Scholarship Federation have asked that we renew our commitment to disadvantaged children within our community during this holiday season.  They have asked that we start a Toys for Tots Toy Drive as a club, and hoped that we can expand it to the rest of the school.  

 

Please support us by communicating this to students in your class.  We will be delivering toys on Wednesday, December 14th (the Wednesday of Finals Week).  You can send unwrapped gifts to my room, 217.

Jacket sizing charts are available upon request. These jackets are the “Neff” Varsity Soft Shell Jacket. They are 100% polyester moisture management material, quick drying outer layer-water repellant & wind resistant.

 

Sizes are XS-6XL

 

Jackets are available with 2” shorter sleeve for no additional charge (which is common for a girls cut). The sleeves can be lengthened 2” for $10 & the waist can be lengthened or shortened by 2” for $10.

 

The lengthening would usually apply to people 6’3” or taller only.

This is Greg Louie, Principal of Santa Teresa High School with a warning about the Homecoming Overnighters and reminders about the Homecoming events.

 

First, this is a warning that there are no Santa Teresa High School sanctioned Homecoming Overnight events.  Any Homecoming Overnighters at the homes of families are in no way endorsed by Santa Teresa High School nor are any of these overnighters recommended.  I highly recommend families do not host these events due to the liability.

 

Tomorrow morning, at 5am, there is the school sanctioned Class Wall decorating activity.  Likewise, tomorrow night, beginning at 6pm is the school sanctioned Homecoming Rally.  Friday, the football teams host Live Oak, with the Frosh-Soph teams playing at 4pm and the Varsity teams playing at 7pm.  Friday is also that last day to buy a Homecoming Dance ticket.  Saturday, from 7pm to 10pm is the school sanctioned Homecoming Dance in the Multi-Purpose Room.

This is a reminder that the PSAT is Wednesday, October 19.  The test is mandatory for all 10th grade students and optional for 9th and 11th grade students.  The test is $15 and must be purchased before October 12th at the School Bank.

 

We will also be on a special PSAT schedule that day.

 

Monday, October 17 will be an "S" day with 1st period beginning at 7:15am, 3rd period beginning at 9:10am, 5th period ending at 12:40pm, and 7th period ending at 2:50pm.

 

Tuesday, October 18 will be a "T" day with 2nd period beginning at 8am and 6th period ending at 2:30pm.

 

Wednesday, October 19 will be the PSAT schedule.  9th and 11th grade students not taking the PSAT have a late start.  1st period will begin at 11:50am, 2nd period will begin at 12:45pm, 6th period will end at 2:45pm and 7th period will end at 3:10pm.  12th grade students should report to the Senior activities by 8:00am

First, this is a reminder that the last day to order a PSAT test is Wednesday, October 12.  The PSAT exam is $15 for 9th and 11th grade students and free to all Sophomores.  9th grade students are invited to take the PSAT and 11th grade students are highly recommended to take the PSAT so as to be eligible for scholarships.

 

Also, next week is  "Homecoming Week!" The spirit days include:

"Morning Monday"--students can wear their pajamas to school;

"TV Show Tuesday"--students can dress as their favorite TV show character; 

"Way Back Wednesday"--students can represent their favorite decade; 

"Class Color Thursday" --students represent their class color, and 

"Orange and Blue Friday"--when students are encouraged to wear their school colors.  

 

Thursday, October 13 will be the Homecoming Rally from 6pm-8pm.  Tickets can be purchased at the School Bank.  Friday, October 14 are the Homecoming Football games versus Live Oak, and Saturday, October 15 is the Homecoming Dance from 7pm-10pm.  Again, tickets can be purchased at the school bank.  For all Spirit days, students are expected to dress appropriately for school and their costumes must be clean and covered.  Due to the recent Clown Paranoia, no costumes that hide the identity of an individual will be permitted.

In two weeks, we will have a special PSAT schedule (October 19) to accommodate the PSAT test for many of our students.

 

The PSAT test is optional for our 9th and 11th grade students, costing $15 per student.  The PSAT test is required for our 10th grade students, as the results help with college readiness and AP readiness data.  12th grade students will have special Senior Activities.

Dear Friends of ESUHSD,

 

Across the nation, there is a trend that has reached the Bay Area on social media regarding clown scare tactics.  There have been reported incidents where individuals show up to schools and public places dressed as a scary clown.  To date, there have not been any reported incidents of verbal contact with these pranksters, but there have been numerous examples of inappropriate and threatening comments made on social media.

 

The safety of our students, teachers and school communities is a priority.  We take threats of this type very seriously.  We have informed the San Jose Police Department ("SJPD") of these newest threats made on social media.  The District is on heightened alert.  We are asking our students and community not to engage with or respond to any threats on social media.  Rather, please inform site administration immediately and we will update the San Jose Police Department.

 

With Halloween fast approaching, each site will determine whether or not they allow costumes.  However, because of this newest phenomenon, we will not allow clown costumes, nor any costume that disguise the identity of students.  Please work together in keeping all of our community safe from these disturbing social media acts of disruptions.

Good evening, this is Greg Louie, Principal of Santa Teresa High School with a reminder about tomorrow’s AcademiCon event.  Tomorrow promises to be a day that should inspire, educate, and empower our students to think about their futures beyond high school.  We have over 120 guest speakers, a College Fair including nearly two dozens schools, a Military Fair involving the different branches, and an Academic Rally organized by our ASB.

Students are encouraged to leave their backpacks home and are asked to represent Santa Teresa High School to the best of their ability as we want our guests to leave impressed both with our school and our student body.

Printed schedules will be distributed to students in their 2nd period classes.  If students did not pick their workshops using the Sched program, I relatively randomly selected courses for them.  If students did pick their workshops using the Sched program, what they receive on paper should match what they see on their Sched attendee page.

Students who do not have a 2nd period class should check in with Ms. Hawkins in the Counseling office to pick up a copy of their schedule before 8:30am.  Attendance will be taken throughout the day and students are expected to be in the sessions for which they are scheduled.  Students caught cutting or who misrepresent Santa Teresa High School may receive a Saturday School as a consequence.

Ultimately, a lot of work goes into building AcademiCon and I hope our students have a phenomenal experience.

Attention Students and Parents:

 

As a district we have moved to the district platform for Naviance which means that all schools in our district will be utilizing Naviance. 

 

One of the mandates for all schools is to complete the comprehensive four year plans with each student in grades 9-11 over the next month. We started this process a few weeks ago by creating School Wide Lessons (SWL's) for students to learn how to complete this process step by step. Students need to do the following to complete this process:

 

1. login to their naviance account 

 

2. complete the "Do What You Are" personality assessment by September 12, 2016

 

3. complete the "Four Year Course Plan" by September 30, 2016. 

 

For help/reference all of the SWL's and detailed directions are on the school website under the main counseling page and the library computer lab has been reserved by counseling during most advisory/tutorial periods over the next month so that students can use computers and get help from counseling if they need to. We also have the homework/tutoring center in the library after school if students want to work on this process after school as well or don't have computers at home or internet access. 

 

If students do not complete the steps of this process within the timelines there will be a two step process for students to get that work done as this is required for students: 

 

Step 1: Student will receive a letter in class warning them that they have not completed one or more of the steps and will need to complete those by a given date. 

 

Step 2: Student will be pulled out during advisory/tutorial periods to the library computer lab and required to complete the process with staff. 

 

Most of our students have already started and/or completed what they have been asked to do so far so we are confidant that this will be a fun and easy process for them. It is designed to help students learn what they want to do when they leave high school and what it takes to get there, including what classes to take in high school. 

 

As a reminder: This is also how we will be scheduling classes from this point further so if kids are not taking this process seriously or completing this in a timely manner it could jeopardize the classes that they get next year. Counselors will be setting up one on one meetings after the four year plans are complete to go over each students' individual plan and help them make any adjustments needed to maximize what they want to get out of high school. 

 

We are so excited to be able to work with your students on such an important task and thank you for your support!

CFS started in 2005 with the idea of using mattresses as a fundraising tool. The first few years people thought it was crazy, and it kind of is. Since 2005, CFS has grown to 60+ locations and has raised over $18 million for programs just like us! So how does the event work? The set up will look just like a mattress showroom (very professional) with brands like Simmons and other top manufacturers. There are 25 different sets in all price ranges starting at $199 and up to something you’d see in stores for $5000 they sell for $2500. How can they do this and give back to us? Since the event on the 17th will be in our Multi-purpose room, CFS doesn’t have to pay for the retail store location and can save anybody in the market for a mattress up to 50%.

Friday, August 26, 3:30-5:30pm: Assist with set up of tables and chairs, carry things in from cars for the ladies, assist with setting tables

 

Saturday, August 27, 10:30am-2:30pm: Put desserts on serving plates, fill water pitchers and iced tea, pitchers, help to put salads on buffet tables, service coffee and tea, and put dessert plates on tables and ladies have taken their salads.  Refill coffee, tea, water as needed.  Assist with breaking down tables and resetting chairs for mass.  Help with taking trash to dumpsters.

We will play our first Varsity Football game of the season at Levi’s Stadium vs. Leland in their annual “Pat Tillman” game. The game is Saturday, August, 27th at 3:00pm. Tickets are available through our school bank (proceeds go to Leland HS), online (Ticketmaster: $5 for 18 and under; $20 for general admission), or at the stadium.

 

Parking is $15 per vehicle, but the Light Rail is another option as well as carpooling with others.

All fans will be seated on the press box side of the stadium. There is another game (Gunderson vs. Santa Clara at 6:00pm) and you are welcome to stay for that game or depart afterwards.

 

All NFL Rules & Policies (clear bag policies) will be in effect. For more information on what you can and cannot bring into the facility, go to http://www.levisstadium.com/ at the bottom of the home page to click on the topic you are searching into.

Attention Students and Parents:

To ensure that students with errors on their class schedule were fixed prior to the start of school the Counselors worked last week during the schedule pick up windows all day long to make any necessary changes that were pre-approved by administration (Ms. Davis had a table in the multipurpose room for this reason). If you did not follow this procedure and you have a legitimate error on your schedule you will need to follow the following protocol to get that schedule changed:

Legitimate Reasons for a Schedule Change*: 

1. You have two of the same class or a hole in your schedule (example: two Biology classes but no English class, or No 4th period class at all). If you have this error you should tell your teacher immediately and they will call down to the counseling office so you can come right away to get this fixed.

2. You passed a class in your schedule with a C or higher grade both semesters but are still in the same class again (example: you took CCSS Math 3 over the summer and passed with a C or higher both semesters and need to be put into Math Analysis). If this is your error you need to email your counselor so that we can make that change for you or call you into the counseling office to discuss this change. Make sure that you are clear about the issue and what class needs to be changed. 

If you were told by Ms. Davis to email her regarding a switch during the scheduling window please know that she will be looking at those lists and will make changes during balancing of classes in the first week of school if it works out, so please be patient to see if you can in fact get that change. 

The counseling office will be CLOSED the first week of school due to new students enrolling so please do not try to come to our office unless we have called you in with a pink pass. 

 

The following are Not Legitimate reasons for a class change and we will NOT consider making these changes for you (Do NOT email us about these types of changes):

1. You changed your mind about an elective and now do not want to take the class and want another one instead. Sorry we cannot do this as you had many months to change classes and those classes are now full (again if you were told by Ms. Davis to email her about this she has your email so be patient as you are on the waiting list). 

2. You "heard" that the teacher is mean, does not give A's, or you heard some other reason why you want to change your teacher. We do NOT make teacher changes!

3. You signed up for an AP class but now want to drop (We allowed students to drop AP classes all spring and all summer through July via email to Ms. Davis. If you did not drop you may not drop that class now as the schedule was built for the classes that you asked for).

3. You want to change your start time. (We do not have room in 1st period to make those changes at this time; however, again if you are on the list for Ms. Davis she will look at those when we are doing balancing.

  • Please only email ONE time to your counselor about your error as we will have many many emails to read and respond to. If you email multiple times it can cause a huge delay that might result in you NOT getting your classes fixed in a timely manner. 
  • If you do NOT have a legitimate reason for a class change, please do not email your counselor as we will not respond to you.
